Crafty juvenile Piping Plover tapping its foot to startle invertebrates:

Often you will find plovers hold one foot forward and shuffle it rapidly over the surface of sand or mud, as if to startle small creatures into moving. This behavior is also known as the foot-trembling and increases plover's capture success and intake rate. Pretty neat, isn't it? :)

I recorded this video, at one of the prime spots, to see and photograph shorebirds in New Jersey, Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area
